The Jill Behrman 5k

With such a large presence in the local community, I was fortunate enough to be given the task of designing and helping to develop the new campaign for the 2010 Jill Behrman 5K Run/Walk located in Bloomington, IN. The JB5K is a yearly held event that brings together runners, members of the community, businesses, and more to benefit cancer patients, support a scholarship program, and remember Jill Behrman.

The end result was a bold new look that brought in 1,200+ runners, 50 different teams, and raised over $26,000 to go towards Jill's House and the Jill Behrman Emerging Leader Scholarship. The marketing materials included highway billboards, banners, posters, newspaper ads, t-shirts, brochures, and more.

Activist

For this project, my responsibilities as Art Director were to lead a creative team as well as collaborate with a marketing team to establish an identity and various marketing strategies for Activist. The brand was to be a fitness accessories line aimed towards middle class style-conscious females aged 18–25. It provided its customers with environmentally friendly fitness accessories that when purchased; gave back to a humanitarian endeavor.

The end result was a logo, website, in-store display, various pieces of brand merchandise, and a number of advertisements and banners. Emphasis was chosen to not go on the products, but the brand's message in order to create an emotional connection with the consumer.

This project was completed for the National Retail Marketing Case Competition and was awarded first place.Team

To keep the brand message prominent on the website, users were first presented with a band of photos including other Activist customers. They were also able to view blog posts, see others' adventures, and read stories of those who wear and usethe products. They could also "Join the Story" by contributing their own material to the community, read about Activist's mission, see what impacts have been made, and view/purchase the products.

Let's Talk

Stemming from the CHI 2012 Student Design Competition of designing a home experience under the context of space, place, and threshold, my team and I took this as the following: Help returning soldiers seeking assistance with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder share their thoughts and experiences to accomplish mutual understanding in the home with their significant other.

The result was Let's Talk—the combination of an audio recording bracelet and an interactive tablet application that provides both a veteran with PTSD and their partner a way to individually express what they are going through, and later come together to reflect on what they have felt or experienced.

This project was a finalist in the 2013 Interaction Awards.

How It Works

<img src="http://payload121.cargocollective.com/1/9/319645/4724664/process_905.jpg" width="905" height="240" width_o="905" height_o="240" src_o="http://payload121.cargocollective.com/1/9/319645/4724664/process_o.jpg" data-mid="25337050" border="0" align="left"/>
A doctor/therapist prescribes a couple the Let's Talk Bands.When either partner is upset, they activate the bracelet and express their emotions and/or the situation.The recorded audio files are then transmitted to the tablet application for later discussion.

Process

In order to develop the concept of Let's Talk and gain first hand knowledge, we conducted expert interviews with veterans, friends of veterans, and a therapist. Through brainstorming, sketching, and affinity diagrams we developed multiple concepts for the emotion/moment capturing device, but chose a bracelet due to it being unobtrusive, readily available, and easily removable. To develop further researchand iterate our design, we held usability testing through the use of a low-fidelity prototype, conducted a diary study between a sufferer of PTSD and one of their family members, and completed ethnographic observations during the study participants' reflection sessions. Additional methods used include persona/scenario development, role playing, and golden questions.

Google Us

My team and I had to develop a mobile application that focuses on fostering closeness. The application had to have the capability of being integrated within the Google atmosphere of applications as well as Google+.

The result was Google Us—a mobile application that reflects a committed, romantic relationship of a couple, and enhances its future growth. It allows a couple to share, remember, and explore memories the two of them hold by showcasing their history in a single constant stream, suggesting new activities for them to do, and integrating their daily schedules together to make finding time for one another easier.

Features within the application include a virtual intimacy object, a shared calendar, shared tasks, a memory jar, starred events, and sharing of photos, videos, links, and text.

<img src="http://payload121.cargocollective.com/1/9/319645/4724662/vio2_905.jpg" width="905" height="184" width_o="905" height_o="184" src_o="http://payload121.cargocollective.com/1/9/319645/4724662/vio2_o.jpg" data-mid="25373205" border="0" align="left"/>

The grey to red dot pictured above in the center is the virtual intimacy object (VIO). Whenever either partner chooses, they can activate it. This causes the other partner's to activate as well, giving them a subtle notification and letting them knowthe other is thinking about them. Through secondary research it has also been found that couples typically develop a personal meaning behind VIOs, allowing them to become unique personal notifications between the couple.

<img src="http://payload121.cargocollective.com/1/9/319645/4724662/google_us6_conversation_905.jpg" width="905" height="502" width_o="1296" height_o="720" src_o="http://payload121.cargocollective.com/1/9/319645/4724662/google_us6_conversation_o.jpg" data-mid="25373623" border="0" align="left"/>

In the messaging portion of the application, it uses natural language processing to make things such as assigning tasks to one another, picking out a place to eat, or even making a casual date quick and easy through the use of subtle suggestions. It analyzes the information in the ongoing discussion and sets up the task or event accordingly.

<img src="http://payload121.cargocollective.com/1/9/319645/4724662/process1_905.jpg" width="905" height="598" width_o="2048" height_o="1355" src_o="http://payload121.cargocollective.com/1/9/319645/4724662/process1_o.jpg" data-mid="25374003" border="0" align="left"/>

Process

Once my team established that we wanted to focus on the intimacy of a single couple, we were able to begin brainstorming initial concepts through the use of research on intimacy in virtual spaces and relationship counseling, affinity diagramming, and persona/scenario development. In order to test our design, we created a low fidelity cardboard and paper prototype then held two rounds of usability testing. During testing, users filled in blank speech bubbles to recreate the scenario of responding to a message. This gave them the freedom to explore our design and allowed us to get the most out of our prototype.

The Haiti Poster Project

This is a poster created for Moxie Sozo's Haiti Poster Project within a restricted time period of two and a half hours. The finished output below is a concept of Haiti coming back together through a typographic treatment. The posters were letterpressed after the original time period to instill a sense of value and originality. All proceeds from the sales went towards Doctors Without Borders.

No. 2

Coordination within consulting firms can often become fractured as people search for rooms due to unexpected or over-scheduled meetings. No. 2 is a mobile application that helps employees find available spaces around the office quickly and efficiently when this situation occurs. It automatically pulls in employees’ schedules through Outlook and allows them to view the currently available spaces that fit the needs of their upcoming meeting.

Connect : Podcast & Blog

Connect is a design podcast. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the academic and professional worlds in Human-Computer Interaction Design. The topics discussed cover a wide variety of subjects including, but not limited to, interactivity, business strategy, pedagogy, ethnography, and methodology. Our hope is that it becomes a medium for practitioners and researchers to better understand their own selves.

Working in the group, my primary roles include the branding, visual, and interactive design components of the website and additional materials.

TMI

TMI is my undergraduate senior thesis exploring various aspects of information overload through a series of info graphics and visualizations.

Artist Statement

Since the foundation of the Internet, advancements in technology have allowed the current generations of today to spread information at a far greater speed, volume, and distance than ever before. Information is now easily accessible and has become something we are exposed to on a regular basis, often at overwhelming levels. The term information overload has recently been popularized, and represents one becoming so overwhelmed with information that it causes difficulties in understanding and decision-making. Although information can be beneficial, it is when we have more than we can handle that it becomes a problem.TMI, or “Too Much Information”, is an exploration of this term through a series of informational posters. Each poster uses a combination of graphics, quotes, or statistics to expand on a different aspect and to educate the viewer.

I chose my subject based on the idea that graphic design can be many things—one of those being a tool for communication and education. Through viewing TMI, I wanted observers to gain awareness and learn about an ever-growing problem.
